A lesion of the skin or a mucous membrane such as the one lining the stomach or duodenum that is accompanied by formation of pus and death of surrounding tissue, usually resulting from inflammation or restriction of blood flow.
Peptic ulcer is found in the gastrointestinal tract and often related to chronic gastric ulcer. Peptic ulcers are a common chronic disease of the digestive system.Dietary treatment of ulcer disease is a comprehensive treatment. Diet is especially for important for the prevention of complications and to promote healing.
The relationship between nutrition and ulcers
Irregular eating habits and diet , proportions and composition of food can destroy the functions of gastric secretion and reducing the normal mucosal barrier function. Eating high-fiber, high protein, low refined carbohydrates will decrease the chance of ulcer disease.
However, peptic ulcer disease also occurs in some high-fiber diet, which may be excessive ingestion of spices (such as garlic, pepper, etc.). Certain foods in the diet, can trigger gastric and ulcer disease, such as regular eating kimchi, tea, and coffee can damage the gastric mucosa, or stimulate gastric acid secretion, causing gastritis or ulcers.
Drug , alcohol and smoking cause ulcers
Long-term or repeated ingestion of certain drugs salicylic acid drugs (eg aspirin, indomethacin, etc.)can cause gastric.Others such as digitalis, sulfonamides, certain antibiotics (such as erythromycin, tetracycline, etc.), anti-cancer drugs . The long-term use of adrenal cortex hormones, can stimulate the gastric mucosa and cause chronic inflammation and ulcer as well.
Smoking and alcohol can cause gastric mucosal vasoconstriction – means the narrowing of the blood vessels resulting from contraction of the muscular wall of the vessels, particularly the large arteries, small arterioles and veins due to nutritional deficiencies. The propper function of pyloric sphincter is to allow the fully digested foods from stomach passes into the duodenum (small intestine) where most of the absorption of nutrients takes place .
However the presence of nicotine in our bloods can cause the pyloric sphincteris (located at the end of stomach and deodenum) dysfunction and leads to mulnutritions diseases , vasoconstriction , ulcer and other diseases as well.In addition it also resulting in bile reflux ,bile reflux occurs when bile — a digestive fluid produced in the liver — flows upward from your small intestine into your stomach and esophagus.
Alcohol contains acetaldehyde which may direct damage of gastric mucosal / mucous membrane layer of the stomach, resulting in nutritional disorders and weakened gastric mucosal and easily lead to stomach ulcers.
Practice healthy diet ,healthy lifestyle and avoid from alcohol and smoking are the ultimate goal to promote ulcer healing and prevent recurrence.Smaller meals – regular meals 5-7 meals a day, each meal is smaller. Eating smaller meals can help neutralize stomach acid, reduce gastric acid stimulation of the ulcers, but also the supply of nutrients will help heal the ulcers.
Avoid from process foods especially foods with strong chemical stimulation that can be an irritation to stomach . Because high stimulation foods caused to mucosal injury and mucosal damage.Such as whole grains, chives, pickled vegetables, bamboo shoots and dried fruit, etc. High stimulation food will increase the secretion of gastric acid. Ulcer patients should avoid from drinking coffee, tea, alcohol includes acidic foods such as potatoes, high sugar dessert and sour/high acidic foods.
